Zume Pizza
A robot pizza delivery startup that aimed to create mobile pizza-making machines.
Fatal mistake: Zume Pizza built robot-made pizza in delivery trucks — robots made pizza while the truck drove, delivering to the predicted location before customers ordered. SoftBank invested $375M in 2018. The concept was sound. The economics were not: food trucks with robots cost $500K+ each, the baking-in-transit technology was unreliable, and Domino's and Pizza Hut's existing pizza delivery was already optimized. Pivot to sustainable packaging failed. Shut pizza operations January 2020.
