Documented cause
Workclass built a mobile-first job board for blue-collar and hourly workers in Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam, raising $7.5M from Jungle Ventures and others. The platform targeted food and beverage, retail, and logistics workers. GrabJobs and FastJobs (owned by SPH) dominated the Singapore market with deeper employer relationships and larger candidate databases. Workclass could not differentiate enough on either side of the marketplace. After burning through funding without achieving profitability, operations were wound down in 2023.
Lesson
“Blue-collar job marketplaces face a cold-start problem on both sides simultaneously. Platforms with existing traffic from adjacent services (Grab, SPH media) have an insurmountable early advantage in filling both sides.”
