Documented cause
Vigil Games was founded in 2005 by Joe Madureira (the Marvel Comics artist behind Uncanny X-Men) and Maxx Kaufman, and was acquired by THQ in 2008. The studio's first game, Darksiders, was released in 2010 to strong reviews and sold 2.5M+ copies. Darksiders II (2012) also reviewed well. But Vigil was wholly dependent on THQ's financial health. When THQ filed for bankruptcy in December 2012, Vigil's fate rested on whether any buyer would acquire the studio in the Chapter 11 asset auction. THQ's other studios were acquired in the auction (Relic Entertainment to Sega, Volition to Koch Media). Vigil, despite having the Darksiders IP, received no bids. The studio was effectively wound down, with approximately 80 developers laid off without severance as they had no clear employer in bankruptcy. The Darksiders IP was eventually purchased by Nordic Games (later THQ Nordic), which continued the franchise without Vigil.
