Documented cause
Verse built a popular peer-to-peer payment app in Spain and launched in several European markets, raising $17M and building a strong brand among young Spanish users. It was often described as Venmo for Spain. Square (now Block) acquired Verse in 2020 for an undisclosed sum, ostensibly to expand Cash App internationally. But Square never launched Cash App in Europe and Verse was left in maintenance mode. By late 2022, Square formally retired the Verse brand and app, leaving its 3 million users with no successor product.
Lesson
“Acquisition by a strategic acquirer whose expansion thesis changes post-close is equivalent to a slow shutdown. When the buyer pivots away from the geography that justified the acquisition, the acquired brand becomes an orphaned asset with no champion inside the acquiring organization.”
