Documented cause
Sono Motors developed the Sion, an affordable €25,500 EV with integrated solar cells promising 245km of range. The company raised €150M through crowdfunding and institutions, went public on Nasdaq in 2021 raising $150M — but needed another €300M to begin series production. Unable to secure that capital in a deteriorating EV market, it discontinued the Sion in February 2023 and announced the discontinuation of all vehicle development.
Lesson
“The gap between a working prototype and volume production in automotive is measured in billions, not tens of millions. Any EV startup that cannot credibly map a path to $1B+ in manufacturing capital should not promise delivery dates.”
