Documented cause
Sono Group planned to launch the Sion, a solar-integrated electric car that would charge itself from sunlight. It raised €50M through a grassroots crowdfunding campaign from 19,000 reservation holders and went public on Nasdaq in 2021. But production costs exceeded projections, the company could not secure enough pre-orders to justify the manufacturing investment, and its contract manufacturer withdrew. Sono cancelled the Sion program in January 2023, refunding pre-order deposits, and pivoted to selling solar integration technology to bus and truck manufacturers.
Lesson
“Crowdfunding validation measures passion, not commercial viability. 19,000 reservation holders passionate about solar vehicles is not the same as 19,000 customers who can underwrite the capital cost of designing and manufacturing a new vehicle platform from scratch.”
