Documented cause
Rdio was co-founded by Skype co-founder Janus Friis and launched a streaming music service that many users considered superior to Spotify in design and discovery. It raised $120M and reached 6.5M subscribers. But Spotify had first-mover advantage in Europe, Free tier user acquisition, and exponentially greater marketing budgets. When Spotify raised $526M in 2015, Rdio's $120M in total capital was simply not enough to compete. Rdio filed for bankruptcy in November 2015; Pandora acquired its assets for $75M.
Lesson
“In two-sided content markets, distribution moats are more durable than product moats. The platform that owns user habits — through free tier, platform integrations, or distribution partnerships — wins even if the competitor makes a better product.”
