QuickCash launched a buy-now-pay-later product targeting Brazil's underbanked consumers who lacked access to traditional installment credit (parcelamento). The app integrated with over 1,000 e-commerce merchants via API and processed R$250M in GMV at peak. The problem was a product-as-feature risk: Nubank, already serving 50M+ Brazilians, launched its own BNPL feature in 2021 with zero additional CAC. Mercado Pago followed two months later. Merchants preferred the distribution scale of the incumbents, and QuickCash's standalone app could not justify continued consumer acquisition costs. The company sold its technology IP to a Brazilian bank in 2022.
Lesson
“Before building BNPL in any market, map which super-apps and super-wallets could ship the same feature. If the answer is "all of them," you are building a feature, not a company.”
