Documented cause
Paysbuy was Thailand's first homegrown digital wallet, founded in 2007 and acquired by DTAC in 2012. By 2016, DTAC had sold Paysbuy to AIS, which attempted to integrate it with its own payment ecosystem. However, the launch of PromptPay in 2017, Thailand's government-mandated instant payment infrastructure, alongside the rise of TrueMoney and Rabbit LINE Pay, rendered Paysbuy's standalone value irrelevant. AIS shuttered Paysbuy in January 2018 after 11 years of operation.
Lesson
“First-mover advantage in payments evaporates when government-mandated infrastructure disrupts the market.”
