Documented cause
Nuo Network built one of the earliest DeFi lending and margin trading protocols, allowing users to borrow and lend crypto assets peer-to-peer on Ethereum. It launched in 2019 and attracted early DeFi adopters with genuine technical innovation. But Aave, Compound, and MakerDAO received institutional backing and superior liquidity. Nuo Network could not compete for liquidity depth, and the user experience gap with better-funded protocols widened rapidly. By October 2021, the team announced they were shutting down the protocol, citing the inability to compete with Aave-scale liquidity.
Lesson
“DeFi protocol competition is winner-take-most liquidity competition. When a protocol achieves deep liquidity, its rates improve, attracting more liquidity in a self-reinforcing cycle. Protocols that fall behind the liquidity leaders face a structural depth disadvantage that no UI improvement or fee optimization can overcome.”
