Moxion Power developed battery-electric mobile power units as silent, zero-emission alternatives to diesel generators, targeting film production, entertainment events, and construction. The company raised $100M in a 2022 Series B from Coatue, G2VP, and others. Despite genuine product-market fit in the entertainment industry, the hardware manufacturing model required continuous capital to fund inventory and fleet growth. When enterprise adoption of electric mobile power proved slower than projected and follow-on financing became unavailable, Moxion filed Chapter 11 in January 2025 and laid off its approximately 200 employees.

Alternative account: Moxion Power built mobile battery-powered generator units as a clean alternative to diesel gensets used in film production, construction, and events. The company raised $100M from GM Ventures, Prelude Ventures, and others including a $20M grant from the California Energy Commission. The manufacturing cost of the battery units was fundamentally higher than diesel alternatives, and the rental market for these units was slower to adopt than projected — clients understood the environmental case but needed ROI cases that Moxion could not consistently deliver.
