Documented cause
Lira Digital built a multi-currency digital payments platform for Lebanon's entrepreneurial economy, which had one of the highest rates of startup formation in the Arab world. The company raised $3M, attracted 40,000 merchant users, and was on track for a Series A in late 2019. Then Lebanon's banking system collapsed. Capital controls imposed in October 2019 made it impossible to transfer money abroad or access foreign currency. The Lebanese lira lost 90% of its value within a year. Lira Digital's dollar-denominated revenues evaporated, merchant partners became insolvent, and the founding team eventually emigrated to avoid the economic meltdown. The company formally dissolved in 2020.
Lesson
“Country risk in fintech is not just about regulation — it is about the survival of the monetary system itself. Lebanon showed what that looks like when it fails.”
