Halo Wars releases to positive reviews, final game shipped by Ensemble Studios
Ensemble Studios built the Age of Empires franchise, one of Microsoft's best-selling PC game series. Microsoft acquired them in 2001. In September 2008 — while Halo Wars was still in development — Microsoft announced the studio would close after Halo Wars shipped. Ensemble finished the game, it released February 2009 to positive reviews, and the studio was shut down. Some employees founded Robot Entertainment. The closure was driven by Microsoft's strategic shift away from owning first-party PC RTS studios.
Lesson
“When closing a studio that owns a major franchise, the cost of franchise stagnation must be explicitly modeled. Ensemble's closure cost Microsoft a decade of Age of Empires momentum — a cost far exceeding the studio's annual operating budget.”
