Documented cause
Argo AI was founded in 2016 by Bryan Salesky and Peter Rander, veterans of Google's self-driving car program and Uber's AV efforts. Ford invested $1 billion in 2017, and Volkswagen added $2.6 billion in 2019, giving the company a $7.7 billion valuation and making it one of the world's best-funded AV startups. Argo was testing in six cities and had a credible path toward commercial deployment by 2024–2025. In October 2022, Ford and VW announced they were shutting down Argo AI immediately, citing a determination that fully autonomous vehicles for wide deployment were too far in the future to justify continued investment. The decision came with no warning to most employees. Ford absorbed Argo's AV assets into its own team; VW did the same.
Lesson
“Corporate venture funding provides capital but not commitment — always have an independent path to revenue before your strategic investors lose patience.”
