Documented cause
Wejo built a marketplace aggregating anonymized connected vehicle data from OEMs — speed, location, driving behavior — and selling it to insurers, cities, and map providers. The company raised $300M including a SPAC listing on Nasdaq in 2021. But the actual market for connected car data was far smaller and slower-developing than projected, revenues did not keep pace with costs, and Wejo delisted from Nasdaq in late 2022 before winding down operations in 2023.
Lesson
“SPAC listings force public market discipline on companies at the pre-revenue thesis stage. In deep-tech and data infrastructure businesses with long partnership cycles, the mismatch between public market quarterly reporting and the actual business development timeline is fatal.”
