Volta Industries built a clever dual-business model: install free-to-use EV chargers at retail locations funded by advertising revenue from the large screens on each charging station. The idea attracted $330M from investors and a NASDAQ listing via SPAC in 2021. But the two businesses cannibalized each other: retail advertisers wanted charger locations near high-traffic areas, while EV charging deployment needed to optimize for grid capacity and consumer demand patterns.
