Documented cause
TuCuenta built a digital bank specifically for Spain's 3.2 million autonomous workers (autonomos), offering dedicated accounts for separating business and personal finances, automated quarterly VAT estimation, and invoice management. The product solved a real pain point that traditional banks and even Revolut ignored. By 2020 TuCuenta had 28,000 active accounts and was generating solid NPS from freelance designers, consultants, and tradespeople. But Revolut launched its business account in Spain with SEPA IBANs in 2020-2021 and aggressively marketed to autonomos through influencer campaigns. Holvi (a Finnish competitor) and Qonto (French) also entered Spain simultaneously. The combined marketing pressure from European neobanks with hundreds of millions in capital overwhelmed TuCuenta's organic growth model.
Lesson
“Building a neobank for a large underserved segment in a major European economy is an invitation to well-capitalized pan-European competitors. Your insight becomes their target market before you can build defensible distribution.”
