Documented cause
Superplayer was founded in 2012 in São Paulo and became one of Brazil's most popular music streaming apps, competing in the market before Spotify's Brazilian launch. The company raised approximately $5M and had millions of users who used it to discover and share Brazilian music. In 2015, Deezer acquired Superplayer for approximately $7M as part of its Latin American expansion strategy. Rather than integrating Superplayer's features and user base, Deezer chose to wind down the app and migrate users to its own platform — a migration that proved largely unsuccessful as Spotify launched aggressively in Brazil the same year.
Lesson
“In content platforms, local product-market fit doesn't create a sustainable moat against global competitors with superior catalog rights.”
