Documented cause
Oppa was founded in São Paulo in 2013 as a design-forward furniture and décor marketplace, connecting independent Brazilian designers with consumers through a curated online platform. The company raised approximately $25M from Redpoint eventures and others, and grew to thousands of designers and hundreds of thousands of products. But furniture e-commerce in Brazil faces structural challenges: items are heavy and bulky, requiring expensive last-mile delivery; Brazil's logistics infrastructure outside major cities is poor; and the category has high return rates. As MercadoLivre and Amazon entered furniture categories aggressively, Oppa's margins deteriorated and the company could not sustain its marketplace model.
Lesson
“In high-logistics-cost categories (furniture, appliances), validate that your delivery margin works in cities 2 and 3, not just in São Paulo.”
