Documented cause
OkCredit built a simple digital ledger app for Indian small retailers (kirana stores) to track credit given to customers, replacing the traditional paper khata. It raised $85M from Tiger Global and others, reached 10 million businesses, and was celebrated as India ledger digitization champion. But Khatabook, a direct competitor, raised $90M; PhonePe launched a competing product; and WhatsApp Business with payment features removed the primary switching cost. By 2022, OkCredit had laid off 90% of its workforce, reduced to a skeleton team, unable to monetize the bookkeeping layer or defend against platform-level competition.
Lesson
“Free bookkeeping apps for SMEs in emerging markets face a monetization ceiling: the businesses they serve operate on margins too thin to pay for software. When platform giants (WhatsApp, PhonePe) add equivalent functionality for free, the standalone bookkeeping layer loses all defensibility. The lesson: bookkeeping data is valuable; bookkeeping software alone is not.”
