Documented cause
MyPayD entered the Philippine digital payments market with a focus on rural Filipinos underserved by urban-centric competitors. The product offered agricultural payment features and OFW remittance integrations. But BSP-licensed digital wallets required enormous compliance investment, and GCash and PayMaya had years of regulatory head start and telco distribution. When the government mandated QR Ph interoperability in 2020, it eliminated the switching cost that gave smaller wallets any hope of retention. MyPayD could not sustain the compliance overhead.
Lesson
“QR interoperability mandates are a double-edged sword: they help wallets compete on features but eliminate switching-cost moats.”
