Documented cause
Midway Games was one of the dominant arcade game publishers of the 1990s, creating Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Space Invaders (home ports), Rampage, and Gauntlet. The company transitioned from arcade to console with early success. But by the mid-2000s, the transition to high-definition console development dramatically increased per-title development costs. Midway lacked the franchise portfolio depth of EA and Activision to amortize those costs across sequels, licensed titles, and sports franchises. A series of commercial failures — including the Unreal Tournament-era Midway titles — depleted cash reserves. Sumner Redstone (who had acquired a majority stake) sold his shares in a distressed sale. Midway filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2009. Most assets were sold to Warner Bros., which retained the Mortal Kombat IP.
