Documented cause
Miaopai was once China's leading short-video platform, integrated with Weibo and backed by Sina. At peak in 2016 it claimed 300M registered users. But TikTok (Douyin) launched in 2016 and Kuaishou surged simultaneously. Miaopai's parent company Yixia Technology failed to secure new funding after 2017. By 2020 monthly active users had dropped over 90%. The app ceased meaningful operations in 2021 as Douyin captured the entire market.
