Documented cause
Chauffeur-Privé was founded in Paris in 2012 and became France's leading domestic alternative to Uber, focusing on licensed professional drivers and a premium experience. The company raised approximately €45M and expanded to several European cities. In 2018, it rebranded as Kapten to support a pan-European expansion strategy. In the same year, BMW and Daimler merged their mobility businesses (MyTaxi, Chauffeur-Privé and others) into the FREE NOW joint venture, with Kapten becoming its premium brand. Despite initial optimism, FREE NOW's strategy shifted toward a single brand, and the Kapten brand was discontinued in 2021. The failure to build an independent alternative to Uber was ultimately complete.
Lesson
“When you merge with a joint venture of two car giants, your brand becomes a strategic chess piece — not the core of their mission.”
