Documented cause
Marc Lore built Jet.com on a dynamic pricing algorithm that passed savings from purchase bundling directly to customers, positioning it as the anti-Amazon. After raising $820M and building a $1B+ run-rate, Walmart acquired Jet for $3.3B in 2016 — the largest U.S. e-commerce acquisition at the time. Walmart used the acquisition to bring in Marc Lore to run its entire e-commerce operation. Jet itself was quietly shut down in May 2020, its brand and independent identity absorbed into Walmart.com.
Lesson
“Acqui-hires at unicorn scale happen when the strategic value of the team exceeds the business value of the company. Marc Lore was worth $3.3B to Walmart — the brand was not.”
