Documented cause
Invitae was founded in 2010 with a mission to democratize access to genetic testing by dramatically reducing prices from thousands of dollars to under $250 per test. The strategy generated enormous volume but required massive subsidies on each test. The company listed on NASDAQ in 2015 and grew revenues rapidly, reaching $460M in 2022. But it was consistently unprofitable, losing $1B in 2021 alone. Acquisitions of Ciitizen and Genoptix added debt without adding profitability. As capital markets tightened in 2022–2023, Invitae could not raise the additional billions needed to reach break-even. It filed for Chapter 7 (immediate liquidation) in February 2024, ending operations immediately.
Lesson
“Subsidize early customers to establish the market, but build a roadmap to margin improvement before the runway runs out — subsidies that never end are just losses with branding.”
