Alternative account: Infarm built a network of modular indoor farming units deployed inside supermarkets, distribution centres, and warehouses, growing leafy greens and herbs at point of sale. The company raised over $1B from investors including Softbank Vision Fund, Atomico, and Amazon Alexa Fund, and was valued at over $1B. The model was capital-intensive: each farm unit required significant upfront equipment cost, and energy consumption was structurally high.
