Documented cause
HondPay built a digital payments and mobile wallet platform targeting Honduras's large unbanked population and the remittance corridor from Honduran diaspora in the US. The platform signed up 35,000 users and processed L$8M in monthly transactions. The network effects of payments require a critical mass that HondPay never reached: below 100,000 active users in a single city, QR payment acceptance by merchants was too sparse for the consumer experience to be compelling. Reaching 100,000 users required more marketing capital than the company's angel round could sustain. A regional telecom operator expressed acquisition interest but offered a price below book value of invested capital.
Lesson
“Digital payment network launches require a minimum viable city strategy: one city, full saturation of merchants and consumers before expansion. Under-capitalized multi-city launches produce network-effect-free fragmentation.”
