Documented cause
Gama Academy was founded in 2016 in São Paulo by Guilherme Junqueira as a developer bootcamp training professionals for Brazil's growing tech sector. The company raised a USD 713K seed round from Smart Money Ventures in January 2020. In July 2021, Ânima Educação — one of Brazil's largest private education groups — acquired a controlling 55.78% stake for approximately BRL 33.8 million (~USD 6.6M). The original investor thesis for an independent exit did not materialize. Post-2022 contraction in Brazil's tech sector eliminated the job placement rates that had justified the Income Share Agreement model. In April 2025, approximately 40% of staff were laid off under Ânima's restructuring. Gama Academy continues to operate in reduced form under Ânima.
Lesson
“Income share agreements are a leveraged bet on job market conditions — size your business for a bear market, not a bull one.”
