Documented cause
Evervault built encryption-as-a-service for developer teams, offering simple APIs to tokenize, encrypt, and process sensitive data (PII, card numbers) without exposing it to application code. The concept was elegant and the developer experience excellent. But AWS launched Nitro Enclaves and Azure Confidential Computing in parallel, providing similar trusted execution environments as cloud primitives. Stripe's Privacy API and other payment-adjacent security products bundled similar functionality. Evervault found its target market shrinking as encryption became a platform feature rather than a standalone product.
Lesson
“Encryption-as-a-service startups must achieve scale before hyperscalers add the functionality as a free primitive — the window is 2-3 years.”
