Documented cause
Elevenia was a joint venture between Indonesian telecoms operator XL Axiata and South Korean ecommerce company SK Planet (operators of 11street). The partnership combined telecom distribution with ecommerce technology in a market that seemed ripe. Despite having deep-pocketed corporate parents and integrating telecom billing, Elevenia never broke into the top tier of Indonesian marketplaces. Shopee and Tokopedia dominated with better UX and faster logistics. After SK Planet exited the 11street business globally, Elevenia shut down in 2021.
Lesson
“Telecom-ecommerce joint ventures consistently fail to leverage billing integration into meaningful commerce advantage. Mobile users in Southeast Asia did not want to shop through their carrier billing portal; they wanted the UX, deals, and seller selection of platforms designed for commerce first. Corporate parents with different strategic priorities created decision-making lag that pure-play competitors used to build moats.”
