Documented cause
BuyPower built a marketplace to purchase prepaid electricity tokens in Nigeria, aggregating distribution companies and providing a simple API for developers. The product was genuinely useful — buying prepaid power was fragmented across dozens of DISCO portals. But the underlying problem it was built on top of was unfixable: Nigeria's electricity grid delivers on average 6-8 hours of power per day, making the value of any metered electricity profoundly limited. As the naira collapsed in 2023 and electricity tariffs were adjusted upward sharply, consumers reduced purchases. The company remained operational but growth was structurally capped by the grid itself.
Lesson
“Consumer utility tech platforms must model their growth ceiling against grid reliability improvements, not GDP growth.”
