Documented cause
3DO Company was founded by Trip Hawkins (founder of Electronic Arts) in 1991 with a vision to build the ultimate multimedia gaming console. The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer launched in October 1993 at $699 — the most expensive console ever released at that time, compared to the Sega Genesis at $199 and the Super Nintendo at $179. Despite genuine technical superiority (32-bit when competitors were 16-bit), the price was prohibitive. Partners including Panasonic, Sanyo, and Goldstar manufactured the hardware while 3DO licensed the technology. The PlayStation launched at $299 in 1995 and delivered similar quality. 3DO pivoted to game publishing with the Army of Darkness, Portal Runner, and Heroes of Might and Magic series. Unable to generate sufficient publishing revenue, the company filed Chapter 11 in May 2003. Most notable IP (Heroes of Might and Magic) was licensed to Ubisoft.
