Why did Yahoo fail at social networking?

Multiple reasons: Yahoo was an advertising portal company trying to build a social product. The incentives, culture, and execution were misaligned. Facebook was built for social from day one with a clear, constrained use case (college networks). Yahoo built 360° defensively, not offensively.
