Chris Kemp (ex-NASA CTO) and Adam London found Astra in stealth in Alameda, CA. Approach: radical simplification of launch vehicle design for mass production. Goal: $1M per launch through manufacturing cost reduction. SpaceX has demonstrated reusability can work; Astra bets that simplicity can undercut even reusable rockets for small payloads. Raises venture capital in stealth for 3 years.

Down round or bridge financing

Astra completes SPAC merger with Holicity, raising ~$226M and listing on Nasdaq (ASTR) at a $2.1B peak valuation. The iteration narrative resonates with investors: 6 failed launches are framed as rapid learning cycles. Rocket Lab trades at $4B; Astra prices at $2.1B. The SPAC market is at peak credulity for space hardware.

August 28, 2021: Astra's Rocket 3.2 launch attempt goes viral. During ignition, the rocket drifts sideways off the launchpad for 3 seconds before lifting into the air — a surreal scene broadcast live. The rocket travels several hundred meters before failing. The video is watched 10M+ times. Astra's response: treat it as an engineering data point and iterate. A second Rocket 3.2 attempt also fails. Rocket 3.3 achieves orbit November 2021.

August 2022: Astra cancels Rocket 4 development after determining the vehicle cannot achieve commercial economics. March 2023: Astra shuts satellite launch vehicle operations entirely. The Rocket 3 series could only carry 25 kg to orbit — insufficient for most commercial satellite payloads. Stock falls 99%+ from SPAC peak of $2.1B. Astra pivots to spacecraft propulsion systems. The small launch market it targeted is subsequently served by Rocket Lab's Electron at 300 kg capacity.
